Projects

Projects organize access to Geoapify APIs. Use a project for an application, website, environment, team, or client that needs its own credentials, usage tracking, billing, or access.

What a project contains

Each project keeps the following resources and settings together:

  • One or more API keys
  • Request and credit usage statistics
  • A plan, subscription, and quota settings
  • Billing details and payment information
  • Invoice history
  • A project owner
  • Optional collaborator access

Billing is managed separately for each project. Billing details, payment methods, and invoices are handled securely through 2Checkout.

The project card in My projects shows its current plan, number of API keys, and sharing status.

Plan your project structure

Create a separate project when an application needs different billing, ownership, collaborators, or usage reporting.

Create another API key within the same project when applications or environments can share those project-level settings but need separate credentials or restrictions.

Create a separate project for… Create another API key for…
A different client or billing owner Development, staging, and production
A different team or access list Different websites or services
Independent usage and subscription management Independent restrictions or key rotation

For guidance on credentials and restrictions, see API keys.

Create a project

  1. Sign in and open My projects.
  2. Select Create project.
  3. Enter a descriptive project name.
  4. Select OK.

MyProjects creates the project and its first API key, then opens the project's API keys page.

Find and open projects

Use search to filter projects by name. You can sort the list by last modified date, creation date, or name.

Select a project card to open it. Projects shared with you are marked Shared with you.

Manage project settings

Open a project and select Project settings to view its ID, name, owner, and sharing settings.

The project owner can:

  • Rename the project
  • Invite or remove collaborators
  • Transfer ownership
  • Delete the project

The project ID is permanent and can be copied from Project settings. Renaming a project does not change its ID or API keys.

For collaborator and ownership guidance, see Project sharing.

Leave a shared project

If another user owns the project, open its menu in My projects and select Leave project.

Leaving removes the project from your account and ends your access. It does not delete the project or affect its API keys, subscription, owner, or other collaborators. The owner must invite you again if you need access later.

Delete a project

Only the project owner can delete a project. Open the project menu in My projects, select Delete project, and enter the project name to confirm.

Deleting a project permanently removes:

  • Its API keys
  • Collaborator access
  • Its active subscription
  • The project from each member's project list

Applications using the deleted API keys will stop working. Review the project's keys, subscription, and collaborators before deleting it.

Frequently asked questions

1Do project names have to be unique?

No. However, descriptive and distinct names make projects easier to find and reduce the risk of changing the wrong project.

2Can I change a project ID?

No. The project ID is assigned when the project is created and remains unchanged. You can rename the project without changing its ID.

3Should I create another project or another API key?

Create another project for separate billing, ownership, collaborators, or usage management. Create another API key when those settings can remain shared but the application needs separate credentials or restrictions.

4Who can rename or delete a project?

Only the project owner can use the project management controls for renaming, transferring, sharing, or deleting the project.

5Can I transfer a project to someone else?

Yes. The owner can transfer it to another registered Geoapify user from Project settings, including with an active or pending subscription. The transfer does not change the 2Checkout customer or payment method.

After the transfer, the previous owner loses access unless the new owner shares the project with them.

6What is the difference between leaving and deleting a project?

A collaborator can leave a shared project, which removes only their access. Deleting a project removes the project and its associated resources for everyone and is available only to the owner.

7What happens to applications after a project is deleted?

Requests made with the project's API keys will fail because those keys are removed. Update or stop every dependent application before deleting the project.

8Why is a project missing from my list?

Clear the project search field and confirm that you are signed in with the expected account. A shared project also disappears if you leave it or the owner removes your access.
